Cancer Research
In today’s society, cancer will affect one in three of us and statistics show that one in four of the people diagnosed with cancer will die from it. The age of a person increases the chance of developing cancer and the over 65’s are most at risk.
There are up to 200 different types of cancer that are known about and each one has its own symptoms, causes and possible treatments. Even though the treatments available can be very effective there is still no known cure for cancer. Cancer can affect anyone including children and can be diagnosed in people who feel perfectly healthy and have no symptoms at all. The most common form of cancer that makes up half of the cases that are diagnosed, are lung cancer, breast cancer, bowel cancer and prostate cancer. There is a sharp increase in asbestos cancer or mesothelioma due to the excessive exposure that people used to have to asbestos, before it was known that it was a carcinogenic.
Cancer develops when cells start growing and forming out of control and will invade, erode and destroy perfectly normal cells. The cancer can stay isolated in one particular organ of the body or spread quickly leaving a lot of damage. The cancer cells are due to damage to the body’s genes and this damage is related to environmental factors such as smoking or as previously mentioned exposure to asbestos.
