Retro hairstyles

This autumn/winter retro hairstyles are in, with many celebrities already picking up the trend and sporting retro hairstyles on the red carpet, featuring classic shapes with old school styling and finesse, like the classic beehive to retro curls all easy styles you can easily re create yourself with your ghd hair straighteners.  Such as styles favoured by Dita Von Teese with her sleek waves and on-trend hair colour or the very vintage look as sported by Paloma Faith.

Actress Marion Cotillard has long been channelling the 50s’ starlet look with beautifully set waves on the red carpet and this is probably one of the easiest vintage styles to do yourself, all you need is some ghd fat hair lotion to give you volume and curlers for the wave.  Or if you fancy a stylish up do then opt for a neat chignons ala Natalie Portman, all you need to do for this is blow-dry hair with mousse, scrunching it to add texture and pull into a ponytail. Once the pony is secured (the sides should be in tight and the top still slightly loose) gently tease out the top, then split the pony tail in and loosely twist one half over the other, keep twisting and your hair will automatically pull in towards your head creating a bun and secure it with Kirby grips.

Protect your hair

Our hair has to withstand a lot, from brushing and styling to the environment around us, there is so much that can damage it, normally things that are part of our everyday routine that we don’t often think about. Every time that you style your hair you damage it, especially when using your hairdryer, ghd hair straighteners and curling tongs, even just brushing your hair damages it.

The best way to start looking after your hair is to use the right shampoo and conditioners, your salon will offer a great line of shampoos and conditioners that you can use to improve the strength and condition of your hair. Although these may be more expensive than other brands found in your chemist or supermarket they are normally more concentrated so they do last a lot longer meaning you do get value for money, your stylist will also be able to tell you what you need for your hair type.

When it comes to styling you also need to make sure you have the right tools and that they are suitable for the job, as with shampoo and conditioner you should also make sure you use good quality styling products even if it means spending a little more on your curling irons, straightening irons and diffusers as it will help you create great looking styles without hurting your hair. Although using good quality shampoo and conditioner will help repair your hair if damaged it does not offer enough protection from heat of your styling tools, you should always use a protector spray such as ghd thermal protector before styling to give you hair protection from the heat.

Finally you also need to protect your hair from any damage caused by the environment such as harmful UV rays from the sun, pollution and weather conditions, you can get sprays that help keep your hair fresh and most of all protected, these are great to spray on before you go out and will normally need a boost during the day.

Effortless waves

For an easy effortless everyday hairstyle, easy wear waves are ideal and straightforward to create with your ghd hair straighteners, it makes a change from poker straight locks and is less time consuming than full on curls. All you need to do is section your hair by placing your thumbs above your ears and drawing a line around your head until your thumbs meet, then gather up the hair above your thumbs and clip it out of the way.

Then you need to lightly mist the bottom section of your hair with ghd creation spray, this will help set your hair, then you need to separate your hair into two sections, in each section place your ghd straightener in at the roots, rotate it 180° and glide the straightener through the hair until reaching the end. As each section falls catch it and loosely twist it around your finger to define the curl, continue with the other section.

Now for the top section, you continue with the same technique, but instead to create softer curls at the ends of your hair simply straighten the hair and simply rotate 180° towards the end, then spray with hairspray for extra hold. Then to finish off this look apply some polishing serum to your hands and work it through your hair styling your hair away from your face for a fresher look.

Keep your hair looking hot over summer

There are many elements that can damage your hair over a course of a year, however during the summer your hair tends to suffer the most, whether your stay at home or go abroad somewhere hot for a holiday. Weather, temperature, constant styling with curling tongs and ghd straightening irons, dry air condition plus a lot more can have a detrimental effect, however there are a few things you can do to prevent too much damage.

When your away your hair is normally the last thing you think of with so much else going on but just like your skin your hair does need protection from the sun’s harmful UV rays, not only will leave your hair dry and damaged but also burn your scalp if you are not careful. It’s always advisable to wear a hat to protect your head however if you really don’t want to do that you can use a hair sunscreen spray to protect your hair and make sure you can apply sunscreen on as much of your face as possible.

A good tip before you go the pool is to drench your hair in fresh water to prevent damage from chlorine or salt and after you come out don’t forget to reapply your hair protector spray and sunscreen.  After a day in the pool and sunbathing you need to wash and condition your hair to keep it clean and add back moisture it may have lost during the day, if you have bleached hair it’s advisable to use a deep conditioning treatment on your hair after your holiday to give it a boost.

When it comes to drying your hair you need to take great care with it because when hair is wet it is more brittle and more prone to damage, so you should not vigorously dry your hair with a towel as this roughens up your hair cuticle giving a dull tangled appearance. Instead dab it dry and comb through with a wide-toothed comb and before you blow dry your hair apply ghd protector spray, which as the name suggests protects your hair from the heat.

Essential tools for your hair

If you want to keep your hair healthy and looking at its best you need to make sure you have the correct tools and products to do this, if not you leave your hair open to damage which can make it dry and brittle. Many people think that keeping your hair looking good is an expense however spending money on good products initially will reduce the need to spend a lot of money in the future.

Tools:

1. A good brush should be a no brainer, the higher quality your hairbrush, the healthier your hair will be, the best brushes have rubber bases with boar’s head bristles, they allow bristles to flex, cutting down on the damage to your hair.

2. A wide tooth comb should always be used on wet hair, not a hair brush as the brush will damage your hair when wet.

3. Hair dryers have come a long way in the past few years and many of the new modern ones now have added extras such as Ionic conditioning to help protect your hair. The quicker you can dry your hair the better, less exposure to heat will cause less damage.

4. Straightening irons have become a staple to many women’s hair care, they too like hair dryers have improved over the last few years to help reduce damage caused, ghd hair straighteners offer some of the best and their technology has been specifically designed to reduce damaged caused by everyday styling.

Products:

1. The right shampoo for your hair type is important it’s all about the ingredients you need to make sure they are tailored to your hair type, just like products for your skin. Also using more shampoo will net clean your hair better, a smaller two pence size in your palm is enough for medium length hair, a little less for shorter hair and a little more for longer hair.

2. Conditioner is important for all hair types, it re introduces essential oils that are lost through styling and washing as well as chemicals, it also help protect your hair from them as well.  Many salon professionals recommend using an intensive conditioner at least once every two weeks, more if your hair is constantly styled.

3. Heat Protector is important to use when blow drying your hair as well as straightening it or curling it, the damaged caused by the heat from these styling tools will be reduced if you apply a heat protector such as ghd thermal protector before styling.

Sexy holiday hair

When relaxing by the beach on holiday, your hair always seems to have this effortless curl to it as well as a relaxed surfer vibe however when back to the realities of home, your hair seems to lose that summer chic look it had when away. However you can recreate sexy beach hair easily with your ghd hair straighteners.

To make sure you have some volume in your hair blow dry first, remembering to use protector spray such as ghd thermal protector which as the name suggests protects your hair from the damage caused by blow drying and styling. You can create volume in your hair by using a round barrelled brush.

Now you start with the back left section of hair, twisting that section and then running your ghd straighteners of the twisted section before clipping up. Repeat this with the back right section and front.

Once your hair has cooled, remove the clips and spray with ghd sea spritz whilst scrunching sections, so you are left with a matt texture to your hair.

Funky summer textured hair

This spring/summer, textured, messy, just off the beach, festival chic, looking hair is in! Styled hair without looking too styled was popular on many of the catwalks and is easy to recreate yourself with your ghd hair straighteners.

1. As with most styles for best results, apply ghd thermal protector to protect your hair from the heat of your hairdryer.

2. If you have a full fringe or a sweeping fringe, start by smoothing it and creating a bevelled fringe by using your ghd straighteners, you can add a funky headband hear to accessorise.

3. With the rest of your hair take random sections & insert the ghd straighteners at the roots, rotate it 180° and glide it slowly through the hair until reaching the end, then catch each section as it falls, and twist it around your finger to define the curl.

Sizzling summer hair

Poolside chic is set to be a big hit for hair this summer and a perfect excuse for some holiday style, the trend is slicked back wet look hair that was shown on the catwalks with minimalist styling required. At Alberta Ferretti sodden looking hair was raked back loosely into a low showcasing easy effortless style or taking a leaf out of Jonathon Saunders book with glass-like shiny locks and slick curls resting over on shoulder.

To get this look at home with hair straightened with ghd straighteners so it is smooth you can work ghd shining serum into the hair from root to tip to create shine, hair then can be worked into a loose ponytail or low bun beach ready.

Curls

There’s nothing as girly as a bountiful head of curls and we’re all in love with this style but few people have the hair to carry it off. However, if you’ve got the length and either naturally curly hair or hair that holds texture well then curl away and then backcomb gently with your fingers for a great party season look.

For a subtle sleek and smooth vintage ’40s style waves frame your face perfectly curl only the lower half of your hair with GHD hair straighteners with a flick to create a bouncy effect this look is great if you’re growing out a long fringe. By working tongs or placing rollers from the mid-lengths down and not the roots you avoid an old-fashioned look which can add too much bulk at the sides.

Hair can go from its naturally tight curls to soft waves with the help of a blow-dry and large barrelled brush.
For a polished style use tongs, ghd’s, a wand or small rollers to create the perfect spiral curls and avoid breaking up the curls by steering clear of using a hair brush or messing with your fingers too much.

Liven up usually straight locks with a few randomly placed tonged curls, giving her a softer, more romantic style.
