Chanel is a French fashion house that was launched in the 1920’s by Coco Chanel, the famous couturier. The label is still privately owned by the great-grandsons of one of Coco Chanel’s partners from that era.

Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel opened her first millinery shop in 1912 and went on from there to become one of the world’s leading fashion designers. She popularised trousers for women, and the label became synonymous with comfort and elegance, producing classic pieces that do not date. The ‘little black dress’ was launched in 1926 and became so popular that it is still a staple item in the wardrobes of many women.

The label specialises in haute couture and luxury items such as handbags, cosmetics and perfume. Some of the most sought-after Chanel handbags can retail for several thousand pounds. One of the most famous perfumes in the world is Chanel No. 5, which Marilyn Monroe once declared was all she wore in bed. Chanel No. 5 was launched in 1922, and has since been joined by other fragrances such as Coco.

A number of the most famous actresses in the world have been the ‘face’ of the label, including Catherine Deneuve, Keira Knightly, Nicole Kidman and Audrey Tautou. They have appeared in countless photo shoots and commercials for the label and promote the name around the world.

Chanel has over 200 boutiques across the world, located in some of the most fashionable shopping districts in cities such as London, Paris and New York.
