Back to the Sixties This Autumn

November 9th, 2011

This year’s autumn-winter collection is seeing a return to the fashion-defining Sixties, with A-line dresses, beehive hairstyles, miniskirts and such, making up the new season’s look.  Republic clothing offers collections that sport colours like burnt orange, bright patterns and polka dots and this ensemble truly pays tribute to the energetic spirit of the Sixties.

Recreating the Sixties Look

The Sixties style is all about texture, with materials like leather, felt, plastics, velvet and wool being used to create two-piece ensembles and A-line dresses in warm colours reminiscent of the era.  Standard Sixties fare like bracelet sleeves, polo necks and sloping shoulder jackets have also found their way into many of the pieces to be featured this autumn-winter.

Creating the look of the Sixties is also about accessorising, and designers have carefully studied the “classic mod” look in order to recreate it, miniskirts and shift dresses are complemented by beehive hairstyles, knee-length boots, fur helmet hats and headbands.  These styles bring back the look of icons like Twiggy, Julie Christie and Jean Shrimpton and represent retro glamour at its finest.

The need to revive the trends of the Sixties is seen as something of a reflective outlook among designers, but this has resulted in a stunning, strikingly wearable collection of ensembles.  This autumn, therefore, prepare to be dazzled by ladylike glamour and classic chic, as the sophistication of the Sixties gets set to walk the ramp once more.

Hermes Makes a New Take on an Old Design

November 7th, 2011

One of Hermes‘ latest product lines is based on garments that have been worn by Indian women for centuries. The brand has begun to make saris that are geared towards a wealthier Indian market. These saris are based on designs found on many of the brand’s well-known silk scarves. This is part of an effort by many designers to expand their range into a market with a growing interest in luxury goods.

Why They Are Popular

Saris have been worn by Indian women for centuries. They are quite easy to wear, due to their wraparound design. While they have a practical use in India’s hot climate, they are also a part of Indian identity for many women. Many Indian women residing in Britain wear saris for a sense of national pride. In many cases, women of Indian descent wear saris on occasions that require dressing up. They also add a touch of beauty to simple dresses or tunic and trouser sets. These garments are also popular because they can make a bold fashion statement whilst still being modest.

How This Trend Will Be Popular

By offering these luxurious saris, Hermes will be appealing to a market that is continually growing. As more economic opportunities become available, there are more Indian women able to buy upmarket clothing. Indian women residing in countries outside of India, such as the UK, are becoming frequent shoppers at luxury boutique shops. Due to this growing trend, more companies that offer high-end designer clothing will continue to expand into Indian markets. This is expected to lead to good sales growth for many companies.

80s Looks May Be Revived

November 6th, 2011

One thing that fashion news enthusiasts can look forward to is a revival of popular 1980s styles. Several designers have begun to create new designs that include the distinctive fashion elements from this period. Expect to see more 80s-inspired items, with a distinctly modern twist.

Why 80s Fashion is Distinctive

Many people remember the 1980s for its unique brand of fashion. It was largely influenced by many of the popular musicians and bands of that era. Both men and women wore big hairstyles. Clothes were colourful, with many neon colours being used. One of the most popular fashion accessories of the time included leg warmers, which many women wore with leggings. Jeans frequently used an acid wash for a more worn look, and it was common for jeans to be worn with holes in the knees.

Some New Items That Are Available

Many women are choosing to wear oversized jumpers that are reminiscent of the 80s. These frequently feature bright, attention-getting colours. They are certainly ideal for autumn and winter, as an alternative to the more traditional darker tones that are commonly worn. Leggings are an essential part of the 80s look, and these may be found at many shops. Tops that feature large shoulder pads are also becoming popular again in light of the 80s style making a comeback. Clothing shoppers will find that the same basic 80s style is there, but there are distinctly modern touches as well.

Ways to Get the Perfect Look

Women who love 80s-style clothing can obtain the look they want in several ways. Some items can be easily found by browsing through shops that specialise in vintage clothing. This is a good way to find clothing made during that era. Look for blouses, shirts or dresses with padded shoulders, which can instantly create the 80s look. Choose bright colours, including items in neon. Consider leggings as an alternative to other types of trousers when teaming with an 80s inspired top. Alternatively, consider acid-washed jeans.

BFA 2011

BFA 2011

Taking place in late November, the British Fashion Awards 2011 are much anticipated not least for the fact that many of the categories are extremely hard to call.  The nominees, whose names were revealed at the start of September, include Sarah Burton, creative director of Alexander McQueen, a designer brought to the attention of the public with her stunning dresses for the Royal wedding.

Burton, who was named creative director of McQueen a mere 16 months ago, has been nominated in the category of Designer of the Year.  She will be up against Christopher Kane from Scotland and Erdem, who is also a favourite of the Duchess of Cambridge.

In the category of Model of the Year newcomer Georgia Jagger, best known for her gap-toothed smile and famous parents, will be up against two supermodels who have enjoyed a resurgence in their careers despite being in their forties.  Stella Tennant, 40, and Kristen McMenamy, 46, have enjoyed a rush of work in the past 12 months and their nominations highlight a shift in the fashion industry towards being more inclusive of older models.

Harold Tillman, Chairman of the British Fashion Council, unveiled the nominations and commented: “This year’s nominees demonstrate the breadth and creativity London has to offer.  The fashion brands and designers that are based here set the trends across the globe.”

Green fashion trends

October 28th, 2011

Ok, so it’s coming up to winter and sometimes winter fashion tends to get a little dull. Just because the ground is covered in snow and the weather becomes much colder, doesn’t mean our wardrobes should become boring and plain too. Winter wardrobes desperately need brightening up, and there is only one colour to do that with this upcoming season, green.

Green is the perfect colour to brighten up winter wardrobes with as it is fresh and has various connotations such as summer and spring. Green is made from two primary colours (yellow and blue) and according to the ‘colour chart’ is said to go extremely well with colours such as pinks and reds. However, when it comes to fashion, green also goes well with more subtle, darker colours such as brown, blacks and navy blues.

This makes green the perfect colour to incorporate into looks this season as it tends to go with whatever is in your wardrobe, as well as being a bright and fun colour to use.

If you’re new to the look, then you should probably start off slowly. You should do something simple. For example, wear green socks with a dark suit, men’s shirts a green tie or a pocket square. If you’re feeling confident, then why not try all three?

If this still isn’t enough green for you, you could always try and wear a slightly larger item of green clothing. Something like a dark green cardigan, or a pair of chino’s. This look will be super-cool. Just remember to think about what colours your paring these items with. You don’t want to stick out like a sore thumb.

If you really want to push the boat out and stand out from the crowd this Christmas (in a good way!) Then why not go for a green suit. Just be sure when you’re buying you suit that you choose an appropriate: size, colour and material. Apart from that, nothing can really go wrong. If this is a bit too much of a step, you could always just go for a green blazer. A light green one would be better, as that way you could still wear it throughout the summer too!

Pandora Offers New Necklace Look

October 25th, 2011

One of the things that women love the most about the Pandora brand is that it is ever changing. This unique jewellery line always has something exciting in store for customers. One of the brand’s latest innovations involves ways of combining up to eight necklaces for a daring new look.

The Inspiration

This new look has been partially inspired by Pandora bracelets and other products in the famous jewellery line. For many years, the company has been making bracelets with distinctive charms, which can be mixed and matched according to taste. The newest necklaces are a take on this popular trend. Because of the unique way that they are designed, multiple necklaces can be layered to create a more daring look. This look can work quite well for formal events, since layered necklaces look good with simple dresses. Several necklaces worn together also look good with many vintage styles.

What to Wear Them With

One of the best things about the Pandora style is that the jewellery can be safely worn with several different types of clothing. For best results, try this look with a simple dress or top. Wearing several of these necklaces with clothing that is lively to begin with will actually minimise the effect. Consider wearing multiple necklaces with a dress with a lower neckline. This helps draw more attention to the neck area.

Some Other Noteworthy Jewellery Items

Pandora offers several other jewellery items that nicely compliment the new necklaces that are available. The bracelets are ideal add-on items to consider. These go very nicely with the new necklaces, and you can easily add charms to match. This combination is worthy of consideration if you want a coordinated look. Pandora also offers lines of earrings that match both the necklaces and the bracelets. Many of the newer items from Pandora have a vintage look. This can allow you to add some very distinctive items to your jewellery collection.

Topman Spring 2012 Line

October 22nd, 2011

Topman has produced an incredibly creative line for their Spring 2012 fashion show.  The colours are vibrant and a little unconventional, but the way that this was intertwined throughout the line of clothing was magic. Between the trousers, shirts and the shorts they have produced a great line of menswear yet again.

Shirts

The blends of colours are vibrant and bold and they are mixed with classic tones of light blue and shades of grey. The fabrics include mixes of cotton and nylon which come together nicely. The tops include knitted sweaters, nylon printed button up shirts and bohemian style tops.

Trousers

Topman has included a mix of both short and long trousers. The nylon blend gives the trousers an alluring look that is unconventional and edgy. These trousers have prints that are juxtaposed with colours that coordinate, but patterns that would not normally be paired together. The designers have made this look completely come together for a nice combination.

Layering

Layering is a big aspect of the spring range for 2012.  Button up shirts are paired with printed knit sweaters.  The look is completed with a pair of nylon pants that shine and have a Paisley print to top the entire outfit off. This is one of the most pleasing and edgy collections of the spring, and many of the pieces in this line can be mixed and matched together.
