Summer Dressing: cool looks for men

March 3rd, 2010

This summer, stay cool when the heat is on. Follow our guide to seasonal designer menswear and update your wardrobe with classic styles.

For work, avoid the linen suit unless you’re the man from Del Monte. Instead, go for a cool cotton combo – the light weight and natural fabric will allow your skin to breathe, perfect for a stuffy office. Wear it with a crisp white shirt and slim tie for just a touch of 50’s sophistication. If you can get away with it, tailored shorts are a good choice for the laid-back office; wear with a smart polo-shirt for a relaxed vibe. A polo is a good way to add colour – try pastel shades such as yellow or pink, ideal for the warmer months.

For a smart look with a casual undertone, go gingham. Try a navy and white check for a more formal feel, perfect with flat-fronted narrow leg slacks. Fred Perry has a good range of casual short-sleeved shirts – choose a button down collar to showcase the ‘Mod’ look.

Make sure you own the perfect white t-shirt – you can wear this for practically any occasion. Gap have a great range that are good quality and don’t lose their shape.  For cooler summer evenings, invest in a great sweater. Go neutral so it goes with everything – John Smedley has a great range in deluxe fabrics – as an investment buy you can’t go wrong.

Shorts – a summer wardrobe staple; buy a few pairs in varying lengths and styles. Combat shorts are a weekend essential, with camouflage print still popular for 2010. Try G-Star for fab shorts and t-shirts with a designer twist.

Have fun with your wardrobe this summer but invest in the basics for hassle-free men’s fashion.
